When I was just a lad I can fondly remember sitting on an antique barber chair at the local barber shop and observing my father receiving a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is these days. There was an knack to it. The barber really appreciated what he was doing and it was obvious that my father enjoyed it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where men could socialize amongst themselves.
The haircuts were frequently so detailed. My pop would be sitting in one of the countless used barber chairs as the barber would deliberately take his time to give the perfect cut. Most men kept their hair short as that was the style back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we envision today, with foam from a can and a molded disposable razor. Rather, the lather was applied with a brush and a straight razor was used. It looks terrifying, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever be given. After the shave was the hot towel that every time felt so enjoyable.
The men would mostly talk about sports or politics, though the subject of women would come up often. It was a time to be at ease and get to know everyone a bit better. Today, when you get a haircut the chatter is kept to a minimum and you often try to get out as soon as you can.
As I walk by the local barber shop and make out the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I question why this ritual has mostly vanished from our society. Do people not appreciate a decent hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an afternoon socializing with our friends and neighbors seems like a job? While I am not one to be angry and only want for "how things were", I do desire that humanity will remember and respect the way it was just a couple decades ago.
