Last month I visited Poland from England. Being an Englishman I obviously did not know the Polish language, thus I faced many difficulties because of this. I wanted someone who could have translated the language, i.e. I needed a translator Polish to English, but I could not find one.
The problems started from the very start of my visit. The accommodation I was living in interestingly did not have any fluent English speaking attendants. Only the manager could converse with me. Right from the door keeper to the waiter, all Polish! Disappointed I made a decision to take a walk around the hotel. While roaming, I came across a Flower vendor - beautiful daffodils and cute roses filled her flower bouquet.
I was to ask her about the price of one flower bunch but the woman just kept staring at me for 5 long minutes. Having already gotten used to the treatment I made a decision to find a lad who know how to translate Polish to English. However as I mentioned I searched, but could not find one. The tour thus had this type of incidences all the while.
Fortunately my work was not of speaking to the Polish people a lot, therefore I was able to concentrate on my work. Occasionally such events occurred to amuse me, that people can be so reluctant to learn the international language. Yes you can say that was real patriotism, but in the search of real patriotism they lost a few foreign currency which could have had some impact on the economy!
But I was also ignorant to enter a foreign language nation not understanding anything regarding them. Now that I have returned, I am studying the Polish language - at least partially. Finally as they say in Polish - pozegnanie. (I used a translation Polish to English software for the last sentence)
