How many individuals face major problems in their lives because they received a "driving under the influence" conviction? On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they need? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose? How many individuals die each year from a condition that is totally preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? How many individuals get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many people are the victims of alcohol related crime or violence each and every year? How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems? How many children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome? How many people's lives are cut short due to abusive and excessive drinking?
So what's the point in asking these questions? Principally to stress the destructive and devastating nature of hazardous and careless drinking. In fact, and based on the questions articulated above, it's a wonder why anyone would choose to drink in an abusive and irresponsible manner.
Stated a different way, with the host of relationship issues, health problems, financial dilemmas, employment difficulties, and legal proceedings that are associated with chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism, why would any individual with average intelligence want to drink in an abusive manner? Indeed when some of the above topics are examined more closely, unhealthy and abusive drinking becomes more illogical and makes even less sense.
Wouldn't you believe that heavy drinkers would be able to see some of the alcoholism symptoms that they exhibit? In a similar manner, doesn't it seem plausible to think that more alcoholics would be able to perceive some of the alcoholism signs that they manifest? Not only this but would you not think that individuals who are alcohol dependent would attempt to learn more about their alcoholic symptoms by reading about various alcohol-related statistics, facts, and information?
After reviewing the alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse research findings, the point is so critical that it needs to be stated again: With all of the damaging and unhealthy effects that are even remotely associated with continuous and repetitive alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, why would any person want to engage in unhealthy and abusive drinking?
What can be done about the widespread nature of alcohol abuse and alcoholism in the U.S.? Firstly, society needs to get the message to more people about the destructive and unhealthy outcomes of hazardous and excessive drinking. Second, individuals who are alcoholics or alcohol abusers need to look in the mirror and ask why they are not receiving the quality alcohol rehabilitation they need.
Thirdly, our students need more meaningful and more relevant educational and preventative methods and approaches so that more students at all grade levels, including those who are at college, "get the word". And fourth, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than resorting to the "quick fix" and the "instant gratification" of an alcohol or drug abuse "buzz" or "high".
There's a lot of room for hope and optimism if individuals can start drinking in moderation and those who engage in hazardous and excessive drinking can become motivated to get the alcohol rehab they need. Indeed, why put your loved ones through suffering, turmoil, and pain because of your abusive drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking in moderation or even abstaining from drinking if you can't control your drinking?
