Hazardous And Excessive Drinking Leads To Depression And Mental Health Issues, An Enabling Wife, And Motivation For Positive Change

It took many years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had enough with her husband's unhealthy and excessive drinking. She was sick of seeing Keith come home after 2:00 AM from drinking instead of spending quality time with her and their two daughters. She was also tired of the second DWI Keith recently got. Moreover she was worn-out from generating excuses for her husband when he couldn't make it to the office due to his careless and abusive drinking.

In a similar manner, she was concerned about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Keith's abusive and hazardous drinking. And lastly she was sick of the dangerous financial situation into which he had placed his family because of his careless drinking behavior.

One Sunday afternoon when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's abusive and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something helpful to cut into the harmful cycle of Keith's careless drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the yellow pages under "alcohol rehabilitation" and discovered many rehabilitation clinics that were all located less than fifteen miles away from where her husband and she resided.

When Sarah called each treatment facility she identified who she was and stated that Keith, her husband, was manifesting abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. She also articulated that Keith had a top quality health insurance at work and that inpatient or outpatient alcohol dependency treatment would be covered if a health care professional in the company health network authorized the rehab.

After listening to Sarah talk about her husband's careless and hazardous drinking, the therapist in an encouraging but resolute way told Sarah how she more likely than not adding to her spouse's careless and hazardous drinking through the months and the years. How? Essentially by justifying his behavior instead of letting him go through the results of his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior.

Stated somewhat more forcefully, the healthcare practitioner stated to Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior. The physician also underscored the point that Sarah would not be able to control her husband's behavior. With the encouragement and support of the rehabilitation team at the healthcare clinic, nonetheless, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's abusive and unhealthy drinking but she would also be able to learn how to encourage him to schedule an appointment at the rehabilitation facility so that he could discuss his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior with a physician.

The good news was that after Sarah mentioned this to Keith and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been quite upset with his careless and hazardous drinking behavior and that he was somewhat comforted to realize that Sarah wanted to do something positive about his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior. Consequently, he made an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol rehabilitation center.

While simply calling a treatment program does not mean that a person's abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior will become a non-issue or that a person will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, calling for an appointment is undeniably a necessary component in the rehabilitation process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting quality treatment for his hazardous and careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was considerably augmented.
