Everybody has their critiques. We start forming likes and dislikes from an acutely early age. Some of our opinions are formed based on our own experiences and others we form based on what we hear from the people around us. Children readily pick up what the grown-ups around them are saying. This is the reason most family members belong to the same political party and practice the exact same religion; it is what they grew up with. A great deal of what we value comes from what we were exposed to as kids. Every so often we find that we change our opinion on something once we have experienced it for ourselves because the opinion was based on what we were shown rather than from individual experience.
In the family I grew up in my dad liked to have things quiet. He worked quite hard at his job & running a piece of farmland so when he sat down for the evening he did not like a whole lot of noise or activity going on around him. We could have the t.v. on low or he would put on tapes of classical music. It was the only music he would listen to. If we had the radio on & country-western music, even country wedding songs, or rock & roll would come on he would say to us to turn it off. He did not understand rock and roll & he thought western-country music was cheesey, even the love ballads and country wedding songs. I was exposed to rock & roll through my friends, radio and dances & like it. I didn't listen to country western music at all. I held my father's opinion of it. Then I started a dating a young man in college that listened to western-country music all the time. He liked the beat of the music and the stories that the majority of of the songs told.
I really liked him so when we began dating I put up with the music & tuned it out. We then went to a large outdoor concert that featured numerous of the hottest country-western bands. From that time on I was hooked. I discovered that I also liked the stories the songs told & the music was amusing to dance to. At the open-air music show event I met several of my boyfriend's friends. They taught me how to line dance to some of the songs. I slow-danced to some ballads & country wedding songs. After university I moved to another city and so I lost touch with my boyfriend. In time I married my present husband & we are raising our family. I still listen to all kinds of music, but each time I hear western country music I think back to that concert & how I came to appreciate it. I aim to let my kids experience quite a few different things growing up and try not to influence their evaluations.
