A Young Male Requires Therapy For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Chemical Dependency

About three months ago I had dinner with a forty-nine-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences acute depression, has relationship problems, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As stated by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship difficulties.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so dejected by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical problems that he in essence has no reason to do much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish three semesters of graduate school in criminal justice.

Benjamin's situation makes me question if he is an example of an individual who can address his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something meaningful about these problems. Or, on the other hand, if he is an individual who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets drug and alcohol addiction treatment that results in long-term sobriety.

It may be asked how rehab would help his alcohol and drug addiction. First of all, there are more than a few newly produced doctor-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the drug and alcohol detox process, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is entirely nothing affirmative about drug abuse and careless and abusive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the road to a premature death, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, legal problems, deteriorating health, and shattered relationships. Fourth, counseling for his relationship issues and his depression might help him manage these medical issues more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in treatment he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Since Benjamin doesn't have the fortitude to do much of anything in his life, it is clear that he desperately needs a little hope for a better existence. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the therapy he needs for his acute depression and addiction and continue with his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't understand this at this time in his life but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs through drug and alcohol rehabilitation and get the treatment he requires for his intense depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

More positive relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and beneficial change are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to obtain the medical rehabilitation he requires, follow through with his treatment program, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his life.
