A Ninth Grade Male Student Drinks Excessively With His Friends, Suffers From An Alcohol Overdose, And Learns That Paying Attention In Class Can Change Your Life

Andy was a ninth grader who commonly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and as a rule wanted to do what his older brothers were doing to have fun. The primary holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a consequence legally allowed to operate a vehicle and to consume alcohol.

Andy, in spite of this, had a rough time realizing the fact that as a fifteen-year-old individual he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, then again, Andy often drank with his high school friends after school, especially on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy was invited to drive around with some of his older guy friends. One of his pals was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Andy and his pals went to a park and drank for about two hours.

After drinking roughly ten wine coolers, Andy started to feel queasy and then vomited. When he became unconscious on the tennis court, one of his guy friends called 911 for help. It was fortunate that the call for medical assistance was made because when his pals went to the hospital to see Andy, they were notified that Andy had been showing evidence of alcohol poisoning symptoms. Stated briefly, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was quite shocked to hear that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had approximately five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he stated this to the attending healthcare practitioner at the hospital, nevertheless, the healthcare professional notified Andy that drinking five or ten cans of beer over a two or three hour time frame could actually be significantly more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The healthcare professional further verbalized how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's breathing and that when this takes place, an individual can die.

This was the first indication to Andy that he was drinking in a perilous fashion and that there are repercussions for such activities. The healthcare professional told Andy that he was a fortunate young man because he almost lost his life from an alcohol overdose the night before.

The healthcare professional also had a word with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol therapy for Andy. His parents were overjoyed that Andy was safe and sound and notified the physician that they would look into getting Andy alcohol counseling.

What chatting with his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a special reason why he did not expire and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the weirdest part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous week in health class.

At the time, what his health teacher, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Due to the fact that he almost died, in spite of this, he felt that he should have listened more conscientiously in class and applied what he had learned to his life.

Andy told his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to the classroom and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not demonstrating more attention to a subject that was as significant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
